In early May we sailed from the Cape Verde Islands to the Azores in Portugal. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but whatever expectations I had were eclipsed with the reality. The weather was certainly challenging and patience was the order of the day. But god, the payoffs were huge. MANY, MANY thanks to Joao Brum, and all the friendly local pilots who are members of the Sao Miguel paragliding club. They were all so kind and gracious and really showed us some amazing places to fly. Here is a couple of photos from our flying and kiting sessions. Enjoy.
For those of you who don’t know how I spend most of my time throughout the year, I am the photographer onboard The Best Odyssey which is a 5 yr. world kiteboarding expedition via a 60ft catamaran. Needless to say we get to do a lot of cool sports in very interesting places. So last week I posted (on the Offshore Odysseys website) some photos and a slideshow from our expedition highlights in 2010. We got so much positive feedback from it, that I thought I’d also share it with you guys.
Kaenon Sunglasses is running a new ad of an image I took of stand up paddler Jamie Mitchell. Jamie is being nominated for National Geographic’s “Adventurer of the Year” award for his outstanding athletic achievements in the stand up paddling world. If you have a minute take the time to vote on National Geographics website.
This week National Geographic announced their picks for the 2010 Adventurer of the Year. Each year a select few are nominated for his or her extraordinary achievement in exploration, conservation, and adventure sports. This year my friend Jamie Mitchell is being nominated for his excellence in the sport of Stand Up Paddleboarding. In 2010 Jamie won the epic race across Hawaii’s Molokai Channel for the ninth year in a row. Not only is he an amazing waterman and ambassador to the sport but he’s also a great guy. In April I photographed Jamie killing it on some great wave sessions in the Maldive Islands. Below is an image from one of these sessions. It headlines National Geographic’s Adventurer of the Year Gallery. Check it out and vote for your favorite adventurer of the year.
Last year I went to Bir, India to photograph some paragliding for a local paragliding company called Himalayan Sky Safaris. The story of that trip is in the current issue of Action Asia. Check it out. It is a REALLY incredible place to fly big big air!
The Red Bull Illume Winners have finally been announced. Surf photographer Chris Burkard went home with the overall winning shot. Congrats Chris!!! To check out all the winners, go to the Gallery page on the Red Bull Illume website.
As a photographer, it’s especially rewarding to see my images on the cover of magazines. Here are two new covers this month. They are in stands now so pick up a copy if you get a chance.
Red Bull Illume has recently selected it’s top 250 images from it’s original 22,764 that were summited. The winners will be unveiled in Dublin on August 31st. Until then enjoy the top 250 below or go to the website for more details. It truly is a visually stunning competition if your into adventure photography. Red Bull does an amazing job at running this prestigious event. Enjoy.
An image I shot of Clarissa Hempel made the cover and inside is a feature article of our trip last year in the Marshall Islands with Pete Cabrinha, Kristin Boese, Mauricio Abreu and Moehau Goold.
I just got the cover image and feature article published in German kiteboarding magazine kiteboarding.de. Last September I was in Indonesia and photographed some professional kiteboarders take on one of the bigger swells of the season.
Kaenon Sunglasses, maker of some of the best sunglasses out there, is now using one of the images I shot of Stand Up Paddling World Champion Jamie Mitchell for an ad. See Jamie, a Kaenon team athlete, in the upcoming issue of the StandUp Journal and follow his ocean adventures on his blog. You can also check out more images I took of Jamie in my Recent Galleries.
Check out this month’s issue of Outside Magazine. It’s got a great paragliding feature that my friend Thayer Walker wrote and I shot the images for while in Bir, India last November. I spent two weeks there paragliding with and photographing the guys who own and operate a paragliding company called Himalayan Sky Safaris. These guys are some of the best pilots in the world and they guide amazing paragliding trips in the Himalayas around Bir. The flying here is amazing and these guys are awesome guides.
In case you haven’t heard. The Red Bull Illume Photo competition is running this year.
