I’m an adventure sport and documentary style photographer. My fuel, my drive, my being comes from capturing a precious split-second in time. A time and place that makes me realize how amazing this planet is. I feel that I can capture images like these through adventure and exploration. Getting way off the beaten path, experiencing rare cultures or paragliding at 14,000ft. I love it because I will never be good enough, it is as much of a challenge today as it was when I purchased my first camera.
For the last 5 years I have been the resident photographer on board The Best Odyssey, which I created with my partner Gavin McClurg. It is an expedition by sail to the wildest nooks and crannies of the world – in fact our mission is to go where few or none others have. While the expedition is based around kitesurfing and paragliding it also allows me to shoot off into strange realms and locations by myself and study for example whalesharks in the Maldives or religious gatherings in India.
For as long as I can remember I’ve been mostly on the road. I haven’t had a “home”, or at least one that doesn’t float since 2003, and even before that I spent many days living in a van or living some crazy adventure. I grew up in Saudi Arabia. Over the years I developed more than a desire to travel, but a need. Without travel I am anxious. My horizon is something I want to explore rather than a line in the distance that remains still.
I’m more comfortable riding a snow board than wearing a dress; more thrilled paragliding in the Himalaya with a $10,000 camera in my hands (yeah, a bit stressful) than getting my hair done; WAY happier surfing a wave than going to the mall.
So right now I’m not from anywhere and my future is somewhere over the horizon. As long as I’ve got my stupidly heavy camera bag with me and no rigid plans it’s exactly where I want to be.
